Compost Canister

Our compost bin is nearly as far away from the house as is geographically possible so it isn’t always convenient or appealing to go skipping across the wet back lawn of an evening to empty the vegetable scraps.

I finished up with a Dr Seuss-like three-step process where I started with a scrap bowl on the kitchen bench which, when full, was emptied into the lidded scrap bucket at the back door which, when full, was emptied into the compost bin proper. Stupid really. Within a couple of days I proved that time flies when you’re having fun and fruit flies love scrap buckets.

This weekend I went shopping with Mr Scott and fell instantly in love with this fabulous bench-top ceramic compost container from, of all places, Briscoes. And being in Briscoes meant we were in the midst of the Briscoes Perpetual Weekend Sale and were happy to accept the offer of a further 30% off the sticker price. NICE!

Part of the compost canister’s beauty is its engaging design, but not even its smooth lines can compare with its gorgeous carbon filters. Filters that have banished the fruit flies forever. Filters that trap odours so my waste doesn’t stink (which is something I’ve been telling Mr Scott for years).

The brand is Ecology Rona and it’s so jolly green I think you can even eat packaging.

In New Zealand you can find them at Briscoes and if you’re from another part of the world you’ll find that Amazon has a dizzying selection. Buy one for your best friend for Christmas.

  1. That’s a fantastic looking product. I live on Ontario Canada and we have city-issued indoor compost bins which look terrible, smell, and are not very functional. That product appears to solve all those issues, great post!!

HI I’ve just rec’d one of these for free as a special gift from My Tupperware Distributor (i’d never heard of the products) and i’m loving it! Not only is it made enviromentally by every part of the manafacturing process but it helps the enviroment to use it and there is no stinky smells, flies or little pescky bugs around my scrap bucket any more…. N.I.C.E. I live in an area known as the GREEN WEDGE so enviromental stuff is huge around here and now doing my bit is that much easier….Kathy

We also received one of these as a special gift from Tupperware and it is a fantastic idea and works really well. Can anyone tell me where I can purchase replacement filters when I need them? I live in Qld Australia.
    Thanks Julie

Can anyone help me get in contact with the manufacturer of the Rona ecology range og goods as I cannot find them anywhere.

    Hello Tom
I’ve done a big search, too, for the Ecology Rona range and have noticed they are also available in Australia. Perhaps your best bet would be to get in touch with the store (Briscoes) where I got this composter from.
Here is their contact form: http://www.briscoes.co.nz/contact-us.aspx

If you don’t get any joy from them, let me know and I’ll go along to the store and see if I can find any details on the packaging.

    All the best, Erin

Hello all, I happened upon this website looking for the ecology products after buying a few at a speciality store near my home in NSW. Australia. The compost bin has been one of my favourites. I have found a link to a few more products and I hope this helps.

    Good luck in your search.

I emailed Briscoes to enquire about the replacement filters and did NOT get a reply so as I was going to be in New Zealand for a cruise I decided to take a trip to one of their stores. We made a two hour round trip from Auckland to the Albany Mega Centre store only to be told by the first staff member that she had never heard of the composter and they definately did not stock them. I persisted and found another staff member who found the right department for me. Then the staff member in that area told me that she had sold a compost bin at sometime but didn’t even know they had replacement filters.
She suggested I contact their head office and I explained that I was from Qld Australia and I had already emailed them but had no response. She suggested I phone them instead. So I spent two hours out of our day in port and came home without a filter. I am at a loss.

    HI Julie,
I’ve just found the whole range of Ecology on this site. Maybe you could enquire there.
You may be able to get the filters in sheet form through a hardware store like Bunnings or Mitre 10 etc. It could be the same as the filters they use for air conditioners etc. You could even try somewhere like that.

    Hi Sue
Do you mean the foghorn website has the whole range?

  10. Sue K says:

Sorry Julie, I forgot to post the link. Here it is.

Happy shopping. It’s nice isn’t it. I have bought quite a few items from a shope in Cootamundra NSW. The places you find these things LOL!

I have an ecology compost bin (love it!) and have been searching for replacement filters. Have come across this website:
    http://www.olivebarn.com/kitchen-compost-bins.html
They have replacement filters although they are not Ecology brand so not sure which one, if any, fit the ecology bin…

I found some filters for sale which fit these benchtop compost bins. They are on http://www.trademe.co.nz. Search for compost ecology odour and they should pop up.
